Rodney Marsalis Philadelphia Big Brass - The Annual Stoddard Concert

What’s Big Brass?

Brass ensembles (like Rodney Marsalis’) have a 100+ year history that’s rooted in the social part of music: dancing. With ties to genres such as jazz and swing, we’ve seen the evolution of what these ensembles are set to perform. Performances that originally would feature classics and standards can now include classical arrangements, pop hits, and more. It’s time to invite a new ensemble into your discography and explore how this multi-piece band continues to push the bounds of their instrumentation with each residency.

RODNEY MARSALIS PHILADELPHIA BIG BRASS

Coined America’s premier large brass ensemble, Rodney Marsalis Philadelphia Big Brass is bringing creative and engaging programming to Central Mass. This group is a great representation of Big Brass today, reflecting diversity in how and why they program. Quoted as “beautiful in every way”, “effortlessly mix[ing] classical, big band swing, New Orleans Jazz”, and “so compelling nothing else really mattered”, this ensemble invites variety to their instrumentation within each performance. This concert is sure to engage your ear further than you might expect!

Music is to be enjoyed by all, which is why the group is so active with young musicians. While in Worcester, they will be working with musicians of the South High Community School (and inviting them to the stage for a few numbers during their performance). This constant striving to break the barrier between performer and audience is what makes the RMPBB stand out among both the classical and jazz communities.

With performances at Tangelwood, China’s National Center for the Performing Arts, NPR’s All Things Considered, and more, this ensemble’s residency with Music Worcester is not to be missed.

Wynton Marsalis

“No one plays absolutely beautifully all the time…unless you’re my cousin Rodney…”
